What is Podiatry?

July 31, 2009 by

A common question is what do Podiatrists basically do?

Podiatry or podiatric medication is a area of healthcare devoted to the study and treatment of disorders of the
foot, ankle, and the knee and leg. Other issuesPodiatry will often deal with include ingrown nails, sprained ankles, nail fungus and treatment of issues related to diabetic foot care.

Podiatrists are also professionals in the fitting of special diabetic comfort shoes and will prescribe and fit an individual for special custom orthotics to be placed within their everyday shoes to help correct some issues they may have in that area. Many people do not have a total understanding that a Podiatrist is the acknowledged expert in treating problems in this foot and ankle area of the body and will seek treatment from their normal General Practioner when they have a problem that maybe might be better handled by a professional Podiatrist.

Sprained ankles are one of the most typical wounds a Podiatrist will be faced with together with the treatments to correct nail fungus problems and ingrown toenails. Ingrown nails happen in both girls and men and are a standard condition. It affects the massive toes and occurs when the sides of the nail grow into the fleshy areas of the toe and then causing great agony and inflammation, redness and infection at that site.

It is very important that this ingrown nail condition be treated quickly and correctly as it can not only be terribly agonizing but extremely heavy infection can come from not taking care of this problem correctly. I personally had this problem last year and was able to find a Podiatrist in Sacramento that was able to help.

Diabetics usually have special requirements when it comes to the fitting of correct shoes and a trained Podiatrist is experienced in the diagnosis and fitting of special diabetic comfort shoes to cope with this problem. No-one likes to be wounding or pain and there’s no reason to be in that condition if properly fitted comfort shoes can eliminate the problem.

Toenail fungus is another problem that Podiatrists regularly see. Both men can develop this fungus problem and typically develops in folks over the age of forty. This type of fungus can be very tough to eliminate as many that have experimented with home remedies can testify. Most Podiatrists have treated many cases of nail fungus and are well capable in the best and quickest techniques to eliminate this problem.

So, a Podiatrist will never replace your General Doctor for treating day to day health issues but is the expert in precise conditions relating to the foot and ankle area and likely should be one of your first considerations if you’re faced with a problem in that area of your body.

You haven't smelled anything gross until you've smelled a diabetic's foot.

nail fungus usually looks like a dark spot your nail. i have never seen it on hands, just feet. they sell at the drug store a nail fungus treatment. just apply it whenever the directions tell you to and it will go away.

be sure when you get your nails done that the place you go to uses new nail files, clean equipment etc every time. they should disinfect their tools after every client.

Very motivational and God-glorifying. Our lives are littered with opportunities for evangelism and pre-evangelism; we must discern kairotically. I have had a persistent calling to be 'misisonal'- a neo-evangelical word I am not sure I like yet :) - to Cameroon. There is a crying need for the care of orphans, and diabetic foot ulceration is the number one hospital bed occupier in the whole country and they have no foot doctor- and that is what my training and experience is in; also my kids have counted fifty children and adults we have cared for in our homes over the years. Pray that the door to Cameroon opens- it was a compelling calling and how I am straitened until it is accomplished. Glory to the Undivided and Consubstantial Trinity.
