Yes, Heidi, I can see how a church bell ringing would have the same effect, or at least an effect in the same family. There is something very asian/middle eastern in a sleepy dreamy kind of lonely way to hear the call to prayer at dusk, or at least those are the feelings I attach to it.

The tube well's I describe were these wells in the Pakistani country-side which we would see when we went on long walks in the evening. The motors on them made this chirping noise which echoed. And this clear water would flow in abundance out of these large metal pipes and flow down irrigation ditches, in an otherwise dry landscape.

Funny thing, huh, that I am writing about Pakistan after writing the article I just did?

Does anyone have any other sounds that produce a similar feeling? Several times in songs I have heard train whistles described as eliciting it. And, I believe, a specific style of bluegrass music is called "that high lonesome sound."

Is it success or desperation if getting your code to *actually run* with a particular combination of "productivity" tools causes jubilation?

All I needed to read was "perpetual motion". I confess I didn't read the rest of the question. No need to. Through the centuries people have been trying to make a pm machine and fail every time. The best sounding one I've read was the one with an iron ball being attracted to a strong magnet at the top of a ramp. The ball will roll up close to the magnet and fall through a hole made right before the magnet. The problem with this thing is that cause did not meet the effect. If the magnet was strong enough to bring the ball close to the top, it would be strong enough to prevent it from falling through that hole near the top. Bottom line here with PM, it will never work because of a simple fact- there is friction everywhere in some amount, and all energies of the universe will eventually succumb to friction in the form of heat. Heat is the dumping ground of the universe.
