Figurative Art: Jack Vettriano, Darren Baker & Todd White
March 2, 2009 by Jason58 · 4 Comments
Artists have always been facinated by the human figure and produced figurative based art. The natural curves and features of the human body are a frequent source of inspiration for a number of artists from Beryl Cook to Banksy. This is some thing that has spread from the art world to every magazine cover in the country, so there must be a basic intrigue for humans to examine our own and other people’s bodies. Three of the best contemporary artists in this style are Texan painter Todd White and British painters Darren Baker and Jack Vettriano, although there are major differences between their painting styles. One thing that is the same is their love for painting the human figure and in particular females.
Painter Todd White comes from Texas and has had a varied career path. He started life working in Hollywood for Warner Brothers and was part of the artistic creative team behind Sponge Bob Square Pants. This could explain the cartoon looks of the people he paints in his contemporary pieces. Todd White’s artwork often shows people in black clothing, socialising and drinking wine and this could be down to his location in LA. It would seem that Todd White is surrounded by Hollywood schmoozers and social climbers and from his artwork, I’d say he is not a fan.
Darren Baker is a young and very promising British artist, that has already commanded a great deal of respect from his peers. Darren Baker has received a number of awards from the art world and has private and public collections in the House of Lords and Downing Street. He has also been approached by many sports stars to paint portraits, this is probably because he was appointed official artist of The Professional Footballer’s Association when he was 23 years old. Darren has a contemporary style that combines realism and classics and he is fond of painting figures. Darren Baker frequently paints female figures often in relaxed, seductive positions and he often uses a mix of black and red colours.
Jack Vettriano comes from Fife in Scotland and has received a number of awards for his figurative and nude pieces. Jack Vettriano pieces have a film noir feel to them, painting many of his subjects in a 50′s style. He often features women in his paintings often in relaxed poses or in the middle of doing something like leaving a room through a door. Jack Vettriano often paints characters that appear distracted, many of his pieces feature individuals staring off into the distance or focused on some thing else.
How Can You Recognize Dyslexia Symptoms?
January 11, 2009 by Jason58 · 3 Comments
Dyslexia is a neurological disorder in which the brain seems to be unable to properly interpret the signals it is receiving from the eyes and sometimes ears. Dyslexia usually shows itself in the difficulties it causes with reading, spelling and converting common words into sounds. It is a widespread condition with perhaps 10-15% of the population showing signs of some form of dyslexia.
In recent times we have learned a great deal about dyslexia, especially in the last 15 years or so. Dyslexia in children is now routinely screened for and detected in elementary school and before. We now know that children with dyslexia learn differently and need special training to overcome the difficulties they might otherwise experience.
Those of us who finished grade school more than 15 years ago had a rougher go of it. Most dyslexics got branded as “slow learners” or “underachievers” and were stygmatized by this type of label. They felt shame and embarrassment and tried hard to conceal their differences.
It is estimated that some 95% of adult dyslexics remain unaware of their condition. A simple readily available dyslexia test could identify their condition and set them on the road to overcoming their dyslexia problem(s).
Dyslexia symptoms in adults include problems with reading, a reluctance to read anything aloud, difficulties in transcribing messages received by phone and being employed in positions below what their intelligence and experience would seem to warrant, these, among a longish list of other related symptoms.
Most of what has been learned about dyslexia comes from clinical studies, focussing on the problems of dyslexia. However, there is also a positive side to dyslexia. Dyslexic people seem to learn to think in different ways from non-dyslexics. They learn to visualize the whole picture rather than the details of the parts. Many excel in fields where this is important, fields such as architecture, graphic arts, acting and business.
This phenomenon is so common and the trend is so pronounced that such people are said to be “blessed with dyslexia”! There are many, many famous people with dyslexia. Famous dyslexics include the actor Tom Cruise, painter Picasso, singer/actress Cher and entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.
If you, or anyone you know, has any symptoms that might indicate dyslexia, by all means get tested at once. A competent, detailed test is available online, takes half an hour, can be taken from anywhere you have an Internet connection and costs less than dinner for two at a medium-priced restaurant!
