There is a lot of choice when you are considering home gym equipment , it can be overwhelming.

Here is our checklist of what to consider before you buy.

1. What are your fitness goals?

Different people have different fitness goals and this will effect the type of exercise equipment that you need. The most common excuses for exercising are to lose weight, to build muscle or to mitigate your risk of certain health conditions.

Many people will have more than one of these goals in mind but your home gym will be best equipped if you are clear about which of these targets is most important to you and concentrate on that. Your workout will be more effective that way, too.

2. How much can you spend?

Equipping a home gym can be expensive and most people will often have to trade off quantity and quality in some way. By this I mean that you may have to choose between having a bigger range of gym equipment, or having high quality home gym equipment. Making these choices will be easier if you are very sure about your budget and how much you want to spend.

3. How much room do you have?

Before you buy anything, you need to think where to put it! Again, not an issue perhaps if you have a huge house with a big basement that you can equip to your hearts content, but most of us have some restrictions on how much space is available.

Gym equipment can be big and bulky and often it looks smaller in the store. So take a tape measure when you go to the store or check sizes at the online home gym retailers before you order.

If you have some squared paper, you can draw out a plan of your home gym space and check precicely what will fit into it. Planning out your gym in this way can be a huge help when it comes to making buying decisions.

4. What type of workout is best for you?

Your fitness goals will come into play again here and also how much time you have available. Some types of equipment will give faster results than others, but they may not be the results that you seek.

You also need to think about what type of exercise you enjoy. You may have a friend who had excellent results from an exercise bicycle, for example, but if you hate using a static bike then it might not be the best thing that you could buy.

If you have been practicing in a local gym you probably have a reasonable idea of the workout that suits you best and what equipment is needed for it. If not, you might think about taking out a trial membership before you go ahead and start to order your home gym equipment.

The Fixer Upper

Despite all my years I still feel like a little boy inside. I have a difficult time looking in the mirror and recognizing a real mature man. You might have considered the birth of my second child would have changed it, but I still seem to be in self-denial of the aging process.

Speaking of aging — or rather fighting it off — my wife and I recently moved into a brand new house and this home possesses enough space in its basement for a exercise room my dear wfe had always sought. I’m seeing dollar signs when I ponder all the small and big things essential, from the necessary but often neglected weight bench and exercise mats to deciding on the most versatile of the many exercise bikes. Exercise bikes can be tricky now a days. Do you go recumbent or upright bike? Should I choose a digital or old-school analog?

Of course, my wife appears determined to get one of those elliptical machines as well. Yes you understood that accurately. An exercise bicycle and an elliptical machine — not just one or the other. My estimate is that the extra exercise equipment goes with the stretch mark treatment she started utilizing after she bore our youngest child. I’m sure I’ll regret that jest.

I have to be careful with the budget because our new house is more of a fixer-upper. We required it this way, yet we still have to cautiously budget everything, down to the knobs for cabinets (I’m not jesting). My dear wife has a pretty ambitious kitchen cabinet remodeling project projected, but I have to remind her the sinks for the bathrooms she desires installed shall cost a fair amount, as well.

Gratefully, we both appreciate the natural, rustic style, so we’re furnishing our new home with unfinished furniture. Of course, it still requires some polishing off, but we can keep our costs down and produce higher quality furniture than we could find anywhere anyways. I discovered a great pair of coffee tables with some decent, natural knotting and a sideboard table in matching oak.

And then there’s the great outdoors. For our outdoor patio we’re researching an outdoor fireplace and we will furnish with some inexpensive furniture made with wicker to start.

Furnishing a brand new house seem so mature, but I can’t help but feel like I am just playing house. The new exercise equipment and furniture just feel like a new generation of toys.
