Awesome Baseball Pitching Machines For Curveballs, Fastballs and More

April 28, 2009 by

Baseball pitching machines simulate fast and slow-pitch throws with risers and drops and help baseball players develop their swing, rhythm and fielding skills. They are an important way for a player to perfect his batting style. These machines allow not only players to practice batting while alone and develop coordination between hand and eye but also help create fielding drills and help fielders practice game-like situations, catching and tracking fly balls.

Baseball pitching machines utilize a ramp to thrust a ball to impart a desired trajectory and direction to the ball. This is achieved through the rotation of a cam which causes the follower to move the pitching arm. Upon continuous rotation of the cam, the follower falls, rapidly releasing the arm and swings through an arc thereby thrusting the ball along the upper surface of the ramp towards a distant location.

Baseball pitching machines are equipped with certain options that are peculiar to this sport. The pitching machine is designed to accommodate fast and slow-pitch play, as well as risers and drops, depending on the users skill level. It may also be convertible, using a different chute for softball and baseball. You may also need Batting cage frames and Pitching machine balls to enjoy the game.

Baseball pitching machines use either one or two wheels which are made of hard rubber or air filled pneumatic tires to rotate a ball and project it toward a batter. One wheel machines are for entry level players, and are great for initial baseball instruction. They throw straight fastball pitches between 25 and 75 miles per hour. They usually weigh between 30 and 60 pounds.

Two-wheeled machines can throw and simulate any pitch from any angle. They pitch speeds between 25 and 90 mph and they weigh between 60 and 150 pounds. Wheels are powered by a 110-volt A/C power. One or two motors are standard. Revolutions per minute of the wheel determine the pitch speed. Altering the wheel speeds affects the pitch types such as curve balls. Spin direction determines handedness i.e. whether the ball is pitched right or left.

The machines may also have feeders. A feeder holds a quantity of balls and lets them into the machine one at a time. Feeders are usually purchased separately from the machine. If the user intends to use the machine without human help, it must be feeder compatible. While small feeders usually hold 16 softballs, larger feeders may hold 64 balls. Also, in such a case, the machine must have an in-line switch that allows the player to turn the machine on and off from the batter’s box.

Some examples of baseball pitching machines are Iron mike pitching machine, home plate multiple pitch, Jugs soft toss machine and Atec Casey Pro.
